To begin the project Year 11 students will look at different types of architectural structures and use a variety of media to help you interpret structure, space, surface, embellishment, decay etc. Pupils will look at the work of a variety of artists who have explored this subject matter in many different ways; analysing how they have used a variety of media and techniques to explore and interpret this theme.
The German artist Anselm Kiefer is inspired by very different architectural urban spaces. Kiefer creates large scale works of industrial run down buildings; built up surfaces of paint and found matter emphasises the bleak, imposing, decaying structures. The handling of the media creates atmosphere, the overpowering scale and decay of these imposing, empty, industrial, disused abandoned buildings. Kiefer often paints the entire architectural space including the ceiling and floors to emphasise the feeling of being overwhelmed by the interior space and includes found objects and scrap metal which are attached to the paintings.
